Advanced, Drug-Free Healing at Avian and Exotics Center of Nashville
At Avian and Exotics Center of Nashville, we are proud to offer advanced veterinary laser therapy to support healing, comfort, and recovery for birds and exotic pets.
Laser therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that helps reduce pain, inflammation, and healing time—especially valuable for exotic species that can be sensitive to medications or prolonged stress.

What Is Veterinary Laser Therapy?
Veterinary laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate tissues and stimulate cellular repair. This process increases blood flow, reduces inflammation, and accelerates the body’s natural healing response.
For avian and exotic patients, laser therapy offers a gentle yet effective treatment option that often requires shorter sessions and minimal restraint.
Conditions That May Benefit From Laser Therapy
Laser therapy can be helpful for many avian and exotic conditions, including:
- Arthritis and joint pain
- Muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries
- Wound healing and post-surgical recovery
- Inflammation and swelling
- Soft tissue injuries
- Chronic pain conditions
- Neurologic support and nerve injuries
- Shell, scale, or skin-related healing support
Each patient is evaluated individually to determine if laser therapy is appropriate for their species, condition, and overall health.
Why Laser Therapy Is Ideal for Exotic Pets
Personalized Treatment Plans
Exotic animals and birds often hide pain and stress easily. Laser therapy provides several advantages:
- Non-invasive and pain-free
- No sedation required in most cases
- Minimal stress during treatment
- Reduced reliance on medications
- Faster recovery and improved comfort
Each patient is evaluated individually to determine if laser therapy is appropriate for their species, condition, and overall health.
Laser therapy is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Dr. Ray develops customized treatment plans based on:
- Species-specific needs
- Age and overall health
- Type and severity of condition
- Acute vs. chronic issues
Laser therapy may be used alone or as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes medical management, nutritional guidance, and environmental recommendations.
Dr. Tonnie M. Ray
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Tonnie M. Ray has worked in the veterinary field for over 30 years and has devoted her career to the care of avian and exotic species.
While earning her Bachelor of Science degree in veterinary medicine, Dr. Ray studied and worked at UT-Knoxville’s College of Veterinary Medicine, focusing on avian, exotic, wildlife medicine, and critical care. She also earned a second degree as a Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician at Columbia State before completing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at UT-Knoxville.
Her extensive professional experience includes:
- Primary veterinary consultant for PetCo
- Head of the ARC injured wildlife care & rehabilitation program for FloridaWild
- Collaboration with the Audubon Society to create a surgical unit for avian fracture repair and rehabilitation for reintroduction into the wild
While working at the former Emergency and Exotics Center in Nashville, Dr. Ray recognized that many exotic patients were suffering from preventable conditions caused by improper nutrition, husbandry, and lack of specialized care. This realization inspired her to create a veterinary facility dedicated exclusively to avian and exotic species, where patients and owners receive informed care and education from experienced professionals.
